Just something I've always wondered. Most people seem to have a generic American accent when they sing mainstream music regardless of what country they're from.

There is a TV contest show in the states right now called "Rockstar" where the contestants sing rock songs and each night the worst one is eliminated, the winner gets to play with a new band made of old pro's(one from Metallica, one Guns&Roses, etc). The best one so far is an Aussie guy named Toby, a hot blonde guy, and you are right, you can't hear the accent until he speaks....on www.rockstar.msn.com (I think)

'Scots', Ulster Scots and Ullans are a language not an accent. that's purely as old because the English language. that's been called a language in a lot of books throughout the time of historic previous. it really is many times universal as being a language in Scotland regardless of the very incontrovertible actuality that different countries ought to not see it that way. have you ever heard a Scot communicate finished Scots? you gained't have a lot probability of know-how a minimum of 0.5 of it. in common words a million.5 million people in the international can communicate fluent Scots. This covers both Scotland, eire, u . s . of america and England the position that's nevertheless chanced on. There are 5 million Scots in Scotland yet they often in common words communicate partial Scots with English in recent times. The language is of direction lack of life out because Scots are taught proper English of their colleges in recent times and inspired to verify and write making use of the English language rather of Scots. there is no vast difference between a Scot/Irishman making a music in English than the different overseas singer. that's why you do not listen an accent by ability of their lyrics. They sing in the language the music is written in. they are diverse languages and should be considered as such. the in common words reason some people do not realize the Scots and Irish at situations is they imagine the 'accent' is purely too good notwithstanding that's genuinely because they don't opt to ought to talk English clone of once you visit Paris and the locals ought to particularly communicate French than English to you. that's only a delight element yet, once you're valuable enoough to them, they can communicate sparkling English in case you ask them to. Many usual Scots change off their 'accents' for videos and communicate English. Ewan Macgreagor and Alec Guinness for instance in megastar Wars. That guy that performed Jonathan in the mummy. Colin Farrell is a modern-day celebration of an Irishman who has replaced his language to play particular action picture characters.

I remember reading somewhere that most of these singers get vocal coaches that work with them on not only their singing range and pitch, but also additional coaching in order to eliminate their accent and sound more "American" in order to appeal to a more mainstream audience.

I agree to a certain extent but have found that the Irish is one accent that is easy to detect: Sinead O'Connor, Bono, Ronan Keating, Dolores from The Cranberries, etc.

Same with Welsh and Scottish vocalists. It all comes down to the vowel sounds as far as I can tell

I don't think this is true, at least not to my ears! I can, almost always pick up the accent of someone with a Southern or English Accent! Dunno if that's just me?
