Was Earl Weaver and Billy Martins
tirades on the field just a publicity stunt to draw more fans and to spice up baseball? Wadayathink?

Billy Martin was an alcoholic who was known for his temper, even during his playing days with the Yankees. Very feisty player/manager.

Earl Weaver was more even keeled but, even his temper flared, but he was smart enough to use it for motivation when the play of his team stank up the field.

Martin was much worse. He got into fights in the clubhouse, his tirades with reggie Jackson were imfamous.

Weaver was a Hall of Fame manager in spite of the fact he got run alot. Martin could have been a Hall of Fame manager, but his temper got in the way of his skill, plus he was employed by biggest egomaniac in sports history. If Martin was employed by the kinder, gentler George we see now, there is no doubt he could have padded his resume and gotten into Cooperstown..but we will never know. Keep in mind he made the Rangers respectable, won a division with the Tigers when that teams average age was rigor mortis, and got the Athletics back to respectability, (even though he ruined all his pitchers careers in the process), in addition to his success with the Yanks.
Tirades just for the sake of putting on a show doesn't equal wins, (i.e. Hal McRae). Lou Pinella won a World Series tossing bases, and Weaver and Martin did also, so you have to be a good manager in addition to putting on a show.

They were both great managers, no matter what anyone says. If I had to pick one to manage my team...I think I would have to pick Mr. Earl Weaver to manage and have Mr. Billy Martin as the bench coach.

No they were genuine and fiery managers with short tempers. Earl's eyeballs would nearly bug out while arguing and his face turned beet red because he really did not like the umpires especially Luciano. Martin had that fiery Italian temper and would go ballistic over any call that didn't go his way and would kick dirt on umpires. They were very competitive and combative managers!

Weaver was a master motivator who knew just when to argue and fuss if he felt it would fire up his team. Martin was completely and legitimately nuts!!!
