Tradition says that Thespis was the first actor (as well as the first playwright) when he separated himself from the chorus of the dithyramb and started a dialog between himself and the chorus. Of course, this presupposes that there was no Theatre or acting before the Athenian Greeks.

Theatre and Acting stem from magic & religious rituals. Sometime deep in prehistory some shaman somewhere put on an animal skin and reenacted a successful hunt in order to bring success to an upcoming hunt. Whoever he or she was, he or she was the first actor.
