timing your breath is the key. breath in as you stroke back with right arm, keeping head toward right shoulder, blow out as you make second stroke with right arm, face into water. It takes practice early on, but is not that hard once rhythm is established.

NEVER SKIP BREAKFAST. I'll tell you, I used to be overweight and lost over forty pounds in under six months. No pills. Just eat breakfast, some fruit or some vegetables and cereal, then if you want to exercise, wait about three hours for the food to go down and go runnning, its the best when you want to lose weight. Then for lunch, just eat another meal like bread, cereal, or a good meat, like fish, eggs are fine too. For dinner, repeat. Best foods: Fish, Chicken, Turkey, Eggs, WHeat Bread, Wheat Spaghetti, Oatmeal, Carrots, Broccoli, Milk, GREEN TEA, WATER, Fruit, vegetables. If you go for a few days without high sugars, your metabolism will boost greatly, also drink lots of water. Eight glasses a day or up to twelve. Do not use pills, or you will end up with lots of extra skin, take your time and have hope. Plus, psychological research has proven that if you have no hope in losing weight, you will not lose any weight, and you lose more if you highly believe you will =) have fun!

It simply takes time. Your head should turn to the side, but not lift up, almost one with the motion of reaching with the arm opposite to the side you want to breathe.
Remember, in the water, you can exhale all you want, but keep it controlled, I tend to breathe out my nose underwater, and every 3 or 4 strokes, I breathe in. If you breathe too much, you'll tire out.

Freestyle: your head goes out of the water to breath right about when your arm is at about 90 degree angle and you turn your head so that about half of your face is out of the water and put it back before your hand starts to go into the water.
Butterfly: as your hands start to exit the water you lift your head up like a turtle and out it donwn once your hands go past your face and are in frount of you.
Breastroke: once you get to the pull part of your stroke and you get the feeling of your body is coming up you lift your head. and as you are leaning back down into the water your head fallows.
Backstroke: you can breath when ever you want
