I didn't do anything special while driving today. But when I was at the parking lot, I could shift to P. What's going on?

I have an automatic Toyota Celica '02. Thanks for your help.

There is some kind of safety mechanism that will not allow your car to be placed into park without it being triggered. I'm not familiar with the 02 celica, but it is usually a push button on shifter or some other means. If the mechanism get's out of adjustment or breaks, the car will not go into park.

Sounds like a bad shift cable. Usually, if the shifter safety button gives trouble you can't shift into R. There may be a problem in the shift gate if that's the case. Could also be the cable mount on the transmission. If all else fails, take off the cable on the tranny and try to get the tranny into park manually. That will ensure that your tranny is OK. Be very careful. Good luck.

There could be one of a couple different things happening. Your PRNDL switch may be bad, your shift or kickdown cable may be out of adustment or bad, or (hopefully not) you could have a bigger transmission problem. It's probably something relatively simple and inexpensive to repair. Take it to your regular mechanic or a transmission shop.
