No matter how nice or how friendly you may be (or they may be) it is nice to respect your neighbor's privacy. Don't get so chummy, that you forget to knock on the door, that you overstay your visit or that you borrow things without returning. Do not ask personal questions "Good walls make good neighbors" means that while being friendly, you still need to stay out of their personal business and keep them out of yours.

If you'd like a literary reference, I believe Robert Frost's poem "The Mending Wall" includes the phrase, but I'm not sure that's the origin of the phrase. I think it refers to the idea that a wall clearly demarcates one person's property from another's, so there is no dispute as to who owns how much land. Without this barrier, there may be a tendency albeit unintentionally for A to encroach on B's property, or for B to suspect that A may be encoraching on his property. To the extent this unintentional action or suspected action caused tension between the neighbours, they would not be as "good" or friendly as they might otherwise.

I have never heard this before but there is a poem that says "Good fences make good neighbors" in either case it means we all need a little distance and privacy . Even if we live on top of each other there has to be boundaries.

The etymology of the phrase is a rural one, and refered to fences. The fences were the dividing lines between farmers. Good neighbors walked the perimeter of their lands with their neighbors to inspect the fences for damage or areas that needed repair. Where repair was needed, they fixed it together. It was a collaborative effort, and the fence a joint effort. the fence was a thing that kept one farmers interests (livestock) safe from the others interests (cultivation) so harmony was maintained.

good strong walls that block out the neighbors sounds, smells, noises, and generally all annoying things that person does keeps you happy. Thus happy with your annoying neighbor because you don't know he's annoying due to the strong high wall between you and he/her/them.
