Seriously there are so few bands out there that have their own distinct sound and most of those have either been around for a while or are made up of members of other bands. Now its all the emo screechy whiny why does my life suck so much crap and it all sounds the same. maybe it's just me but I'll stick with bands that don't all sound the same

Look beyond what Clear Channel and MTV feed you. There is good stuff out there...you have to do some work to find it.

Really it's just the cookie cutter of the day. While there have likely been a few times in music history where everything wasn't all the same, they are few and far between. Record producers see some band with a specific sound that is doing well, so they want a bunch of bands that sound just like them. Go back to the 50's with doowop, the 60's with jam bands, the 70's with disco, the 80's with electronic synth pop (and even metal), and the 90's with grunge.

To someone not familiar with these eras, they'll think (I'll take the 90's as an example, as it will have the most familiarity) everything from that era was cookie cutter. Play someone songs from Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, Nirvana, and STP all in a row to my grandmother and she would swear it's all the same song. Just like anyone with 1/3 of a brain does now with Nickelback. Oh wait, those really are the same song though. Well, close enough... you get the idea

Cause its corporate man... Its the corporate world. Music has been given to the white collies...

Every genre of music has had its golden age... where it goes through the original blast where its great music then copy cats come around and then the people absorb it to sound like the original blast/shock... then it gets old and a new genre comes along because what is rebellious is loved by teens... and teen consuming music is a huge market... so there ya go, full circle

Underground is the way to go for original sounds... like always

Because mtv is marketing it all to little pre teens and if they find something that makes them millions they stick with it until there will be no real music in the world just preppy little bands or pop artist like paris hilton. Mtv is killing music. Fallout boy Panic at the Disco they are all products of the mtv machine.

because most of it has come straight out of a cookie cutter. I completly agree with you and Ive started looking back in time for music to listen to. I was talking with a friend the other day and we both agreed on that fact and thought that maybe because there is no Ed Sulliuvan show or anything like that really anymore and CBGBs is closing down, times are a changing and its a sad thing.

Personally I think the 80's was the time for all the great bands. I do like some songs of different eras but the 80's rocked!
