go to the local social security office and sign the papers.5-10 days ,they mail it .....you will need your driver lic. and birth cert.

when you apply for your new card they will give you a paper saying that it`s your # and the card is in the mail.

If you know your number, it will still take 4 to 6 weeks to get a new one.

If it's for employment paperwork, they can take alternate forms of ID, employers have to fill out an "I-9", which proves you are a US citizen, and that's what it's for. There is a list of ID's that they can choose from, so if you feel like you won't be starting on the wrong foot, ask about that.

After you fill out the forms, you will receive it in the mail in 2-3 weeks. They will not give you one when you show up in person. If you need proof of it sooner, the Social Security Admin. will give you a printout prooving who you are and your SSN. Another way I had to resort to a few years ago was to get a copy of the copy my employer had made of mine at work.
Have a good one!

Mine only took a 2 weeks. If it doesnt come in by then, call and make sure they didnt lose your app. They have a habit of doing that. If you need it 4 something important, if you go to the office they can give you something proving the number.
