My car was stolen a few months back and the steering column is all messed up....I have to start it underneath by sticking my key into this little white circular piece then I have to put my key into the ignition switch so the steering wheel doesn't lock up.....I tried to get my tags renewed but couldn't....need to pass an emissions test first but was denied for this reason....the guy said something about a start switch which I have no clue......I'm just looking for a temporary CHEAP fix to pass emissions till I can get the whole thing fixed......any help would be appreciated

try calling/going to a junkyard..take your car with you...they can usually find the piece cheap

To replace the entire ignition starter switch and lock cylinder would cost between $71 and $93 depending on if your 1999 Honda Civic has an automatic or manual transmission. Here is a photo of the ignition starter switch and lock for a manual transmission Honda Civic: http://www.rockauto.com/ref/SMP/SMPDetail2.html?US285.jpg

If it was stolen, just have the insurance company fix it for you, and in the meantime, have the insurance company get you a rental. You do have insurance, don't you? If your car is not factory, and/or is all hacked up, it will still NOT pass, no matter what kind of halfassed cob job you do on it.
