new wiring cost 50 cents a foot for 12/2 or 12/3 and about 30 cents a foot for 14/3 or 14/2 at lowes, if you need 220 lines replaced that cost around 2.25 a foot.now figure out about how many ft. you need and you will know the cost of the wire.if it is a simple remove and replace job with little or no fishing through walls and ceilings an elictrician will charge roughly between 8 and 12 dollars a ft. to install it. others may charge by the hour and that can be anywhere from 25 to 40 dollars an hour.

Absolutely -- get several quotes. You will see quotes from reputable electricians vary by thousands of dollars. Licensed and bonded -- the results you get from them will be good quality and not much different from each other. That is, the higher dollar quotes don't necessarily mean better quality results. Go with someone who shows up on time, has a reasonable quote, and seems to have his/her act together. Bonus points for someone who lives in the immediate surrounding area -- easier to get them back over for any required adjustments.

I suspect the quote you get is going to be roughly double what your other answerer said. You may see lower end quotes pushing $5000. In the past 8 months so or the price of metals has SKYROCKETED. So a 250 foot roll of 14/3 basic copper romex wire that was $20 last year is between $75 to $100 now. The price of materials is a significant component of a re-wire job.

The electricians will like it when they see the easy access that you have from the basement to the first floor wiring. You are probably going to need that 1960's wiring looked at as well.... to make sure they didn't use aluminum wiring. Fire hazzard.

Good luck.

Kind of depends on where you live and who you have do it. We had all the Knob and Tube wiring replaced in our 2 story house in MO. by an electrician in 2002 and it cost us $2500. We had to have it replaced before we could get home insurance.
My recommendation is to get at least 3-4 estimates from reputable electricians. Our estimates ranged from $2500 to $7800.
Best of luck to you

The wiring doesn't have to be removed just disconnected, a lic. electrican in your area can do it you'll also have to have new wiring installed to replace anything that was on those lines
