The death certificate is public record and you can get it at the county courthouse for a fee usually. I am not sure if that is what you are asking but a start.

Do you have the death certificate? I will state the cause of death. If you do not have one, you can get one from your state vital records office. It would be a good place to start.

If you know what state he died in, you can go to that state's web site, find the link to the public records and type in his name and date of death. It will give a cause of death, at least it did when I typed in my grandfather's where he died.

My dad died around the same time (1979).

You could get his death certificate from the county where he passed away...it would just tell you what he died from but maybe that would help.
