For what it's worth: in political science literature, cleavage is the division between large groups of people in a nation. For example, in the US, some are suggesting there is a cleavage between conservative and liberals, while others hold the idea that there is one between african americans and white america. A general idea is that cleaving is more likely when the differences are easily observe like via race, language or religion.
In Khyrgistan, for example, the cleavage is clearly between the indigenous clan population and the folks imported there by the soviets over the years to create a cosmopolitan culture. It didn't work, so the "cleavage" remains to this day.
