To learn how to ride, try one of these places:

My brother took motorcycle riding classes at one of these ( I forget which one) and said that on the last day of classes you get your license right there!

As far as buying a motorcycle, you have to do your homework. I've seen people of all sizes riding bikes. The people at the school will help you figure out what the right size is for you. There are a few place in Chicago that sell new and used bikes. Do a little internet search or check the newpaper want ads. People are always selling their bikes.

Oh, and wear a helmet at all times!

i don't know any specifics about Chicago, but call your DMV. They may have a list of places that teach the Motorcycle Safety Course. Go through the course- it will teach you how to drive safely plus if you pass some insurance companies will give yu a discount on your vehicle insurance ( car and motorcycle).
Don't listen to what people say about being too small. There are different size motorcycles, as well as some pretty impressive fully automatic motorcycles and scooters (not just little ones - they make them so you can go on the highway with them).
Some states accept the Motorcycle Safety Course and will give you your motorcycle license when you pass, so all you'll have to do is take the written test.
I know, I've done all of the above and I'm only 5'2" and a female.
Just best safe and make sure you watch out for other drivers. They are not used to checking for a bike, so that's how a lot of accidents happen.
Look at the Yahoo groups. There are groups specifically for women riders as well as other bike groups by state and type of bike. They are all very helpful. Also About.com has a great motorcycle forum. They have all sorts of information on new riders, bikes, state info, rallies, etc. I highly recommend that group. They are honest and supportive. They will give you an honest opinion even if it is not what you want to hear, but you have to respect them because they have LOTS of experienced riders.

You go girl! Keep the shiny side up!

Yeah take a motorcycle safety course, it will definately help out learning all the necessary skills for the road. Shifting on a motorcycle is different than a car, it's easier, I tried to drive a stick shift car once...heh yeah it was bad. Anyway my husband and I just bought our first bike tonight, it's a Yamaha XT225 dual sport which is street legal but you can go off roading too. When your looking for a bike just make sure you can put your feet on the ground when you sit on it. Here is website for the motorcycle safety foundation and you can find out where to take a class in your area. My husband and I are also small and short so I know how you feel! Seriously though, always wear a helmet and look out for traffic. Good luck and have fun riding!
