;) Myself, I believe what makes the BEST avatar is when the individual achieves a fairly-good in-depth self-portrait: I honestly worked HARD to CHOOSE the best options where mine WOULD be! :D
[I am honestly even MORE blue in my DL pic.]
Mine turned out to be an internal self-portrait combined with an external one--it looks like the sum of my self: philosophical, medical, all components considered, an image of the inadequately-breathing dead, a way of being honest with myself in regard to my overall health picture, a coping mechanism in its way, just like my nick, I think they make a good match. ;)
I think that is the BEST way to reflect one's overall look, if one does in fact capture the WHOLE of one's *look*--looking outside AND INSIDE, the honest facts of their lives.
In that sense, I believe my avatar is a declaration that I am at peace with myself, my life, my fate, which is a gift I would wish for anyone on the path to happiness. :)
I think overall the avatar system is fun, light-hearted, and I actually appreciate the somewhat entertaining way to express my more macabre reality. ;)
I mean, where else can you find such a *cute* way to visually express that I have lost my ever-lovin' mind than that pic showing me there holding my head after it's gone and rolled off? ;)
I also appreciate that it gives ALL users the chance to sort through what they value, how they perceive themselves, how they wish to appear vs how they DO actually appear...what they hope to see in the mirror vs reality...whether they like ALL their components...whether they like THEMSELVES...key factors brought to light by your excellent question--THANKS! :D

My nickname comes from a play off my own nickname...my guy friends call me Carlito and the movie it comes from Carlito's Way. Yeah, I'm sooooo creative lol.
My avatar is standing in a bedroom. My avatar has a blanket wrapped around it and slippers because that's exactly how you can find me when I'm on my pc.
My avatar really does look like me, it's actually kind of scary.
Since the avatar looks like me, I'll stick with my own looks! I have a little more character. A couple of laugh lines here and there :)

I modeled my Avatar to look very similar to myself...i was so happy to find that hairstyle cause i wear my hair like that all the time...they don't really have the right skin color for me...I'm mixed black and Chinese and I'm kind of yellowish brown but whatever....i don't have glasses but I'm going to get them soon and the outfit is def something I would wear...my avatar is in a college dorm room because I'm a sophomore at UF right now and that's where i spend most of my time....I'd rather look like me then the avatar cause the avatars head is too big for its body LOL

1. It is standing in front of a skulls background because I have been labeled a "rocker" and because I am depressed at the moment...
2. It is wearing a red tank top because I loooove tank tops and hate wearing anything else unless I haven't shaved my pits lol.
3. I have been told it really looks like me.
4. I would rather look like myself for several reasons. Firstly because I hate her expression...vacant. Her arms are crossed and make her look haughty or disdainful, even uncaring. Also, my hair is less scraggly. But the main reason is because anyone could make their avatar look just like mine, but no one could ever be just like me.
As for my nickname...Susie is actually my name. Shocker, right? ;-)

Well, my avatar is standing in front of the mall because I really like malls and LOVE to shop there.
It is wearing a red halter top with sand-blasted jeans with flares because I adore jeans and I like that "casual-yet-nice" look.
Surprisingly it does look a lot like me! Not exactly, mind you, but yes--very similar.
I would rather be myself, but have my avatar's unblemished visage. She doesn't have to deal with teen hormones and the inevitable acne (though mine is surprisingly minimal). But yeah--I'm perfectly happy with myself and wouldn't trade it for the world!

Girl, this is great, because I was just thinking about this. I made my Avatar yesterday and I couldn't believe it looked just like me. Seriously. And I am free because that's my nickname, and mixed because I am proud of that.

I love birds. It is also my character name on World of Warcraft.
I took the features that look most like me. I thought it was all right. then this guy replied to a question I posted that I was pretty . . . ugly, and was I a guy?
