Actually, the easiest way to do this is to purchase an upgrade kit from Newegg, the kit will cost you $50, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817155602 (does not include hard drive) and the 80GB hard drive will cost you at least $75, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822152503
What you will do is first is install the new drive into the external enclosure, once you have done that, connect it to your computer via the USB cable and put the Apricorn CD in (note your BIOS must be set to be able to boot from a CD, if not, change that setting) and make sure that the drive is set to accept power from the AC adapter rather than over USB (only use this for the transfer part). Now, once the CD boots, you will have the option of copying all the contents (including the OS) over to the new drive. Allow that to happen. After it has finished, shut down. Now remove the old drive from your laptop and install the new one that you just transferred the data to. It should boot like normal. If it does, you can then format the old drive and use it as an external drive.

If your Operating system is on the 40GB HDD and you want to remove that 40GB and replace it with 60 or 80 then you need to install the OS once again cos you are removing the HDD that has a OS.
If you are adding that 60 or 80GB then it is absolutly not required. cos you already have and OS. there will not be any problem. so dont worry just go ahead and increase your sys capacity.

You might not have to reinstall Windows.
Connect the new hard drive.
You first need to copy the Windows system files to the new hard drive from the old computer.
If you want to see what files you need to copy you can just take out the hard drive and connect it to another computer or just search the internet.

Easiest way to do so would to image your drive to your desktop with a program like Norton Ghost or try the link and see if you can't find some free software that fits your needs. Put the image on your desktop and once you install the bigger HD into your laptop, you can restore the image to the new drive and have everything already setup for you.
