Jason I gave you a great explanation of your question. The only thing that I would add is that it is not advisable to hold on to the certificates yourself. If you do I can guarantee that you will eventually have issues when the company pays dividends or undergoes a stock split. Good luck

In your online account you get a message with the confirmation number that the stock has been purchased. Keep in mind, that when buying a stock at that second...by the time the information gets passed through the internet...then to the broker...then submitted onto NYSE or other stock exchange...then inputted into the computer for your order...the price might & will change. Good luck.

You will not receive Stock Certificates (Stock Papers) unless you ask. Most firms will charge you a fee to send them out. The brokerage firm has to contact the transfer agent to have the shares registered to you. The transfer agent then ships the shares to you. If you leave the shares at the brokerage firm (it is rare that one doesn't) then the shares are held in what is called "Streetname". Your proof of purchase is your confirmation and your monthly statements.

Your stock certificates will only be sent to you if you request them. Nobody does this anymore, though.
Just use a reputable broker and you will be fine. Online, your portfolio will show the stocks you bought in your account, seconds after you buy them.

You should receive a confirmation of your purchase, either through email or in the mail. And you should be able to access your account to see what's in it and it's value.
