i knew a Bertha that was very pretty, educated and trendy. She was from Ecuador.
Jennifer? Common name (J. Aniston, J. Connely, J. Lopez,...)
Jose is a common name in many Latin American countries.
Marcus: there was a TV show about a doctor named Marcus Welby, who was kind, sensitive, caring and a nice father figure.
Shaniqua is in a song by Little T
This are the lyrics:

Hello?
Nah, nah, she don't live here, man.
I thought I told you!
Yo I think you need to step off, alright!?
Moved into my apartment at the University,
The only one who lives here's me,
So why the phone ring all day long,
I got no friends 'cept Mike and he's gone for the summer,
And I just want some peace and quiet,
Go to my room it's a telephone riot,
Ring-aling-aling,
Everytime I take a step can't sleep can't eat can't breathe can't get,
Any of my work done,
'Cause people keep callin' with the same damn question,
(Hello, is Shaniqua there?)
Nah, Shaniqua moved out last year,
I think you got the wrong number,
This is Little T,
(You mean Shaniqua's brother?)
Man, can't you just leave me alone,
This ain't Shaniqua's house this ain't her phone!
And don't call back again,
'Cause if you do you know the answer man:
CHORUS
Shaniqua don't live here no more,
Shaniqua don't live here no more,
Shaniqua don't live here no more,
(Is Shaniqua there?)
Hell no!
Shaniqua don't live here no more,
Shaniqua don't live here no more,
Shaniqua don't live here no more,
(Is Shaniqua there?)

Not trying to accuse you of anything - please don't take offense - but I feel like your question is fishing for stereotypes. I'm brave -- so I'll answer anyway...I think a couple of those names have ethnic implications because they tend to be used more by some races than others, and two of the names sort of represent past generations -- one very old fashioned name and another that was very popular in the 1970s.

I can't honestly say I "see" any certain image...except that as it happens, with the exception of Bertha, I've known at least three people, so I'm picturing all the people I know with those names. So except for Bertha, that's quite a few people, as I'm a teacher in a large, diverse urban high school, and I never forget a student. :-)

I see people I know by those names - except Bertha, for that one I see a cow :P
But, if you're wondering about race and all, the Jennifer who came to mind is part white, part Japanese, Shaniqua=black, Jose=one of my students who I think was Mexican, and Marcus=this kind of violent white boy who went to my elementary school.

The first one I see this good looking girl I know named Jen my boy went out with
The second I see my aunt Shaniqua but we call her Shauny
The third I see my best freind Jose I've known since 1st grade, but we call him Ellz
The 4th I see my cousins baby Marcus
And the last I see an old white lady because it sounds like an old white lady name.

I see my daughter, Jennifer Lynne. She died at the age of 3 along with her brother Anthony. She was 3 & he was 7. She was very pretty & I'm sure she would be beautiful today. This happened in 1981.

Jennifer--every other girl in my white-bread high school...they were mostly stuck-up and pretentious, but it didn't matter if their name was Jennifer

Shaniqua--a self-righteous black girl

Jose--a macho Mexican dude (the classic "women are inferior" kind of guy)

Marcus--could be either a brainy black guy or a geeky white guy

Bertha--yikes...a fat, old lady (could be black or white...I've known both)

Jennifer= plain Jane, not pretty, not ugly, just plain features
Jose=Latin decent, short young, clean shaven
Shaniqua= pretty black girl, petite, short curly hair, but not kinky
Marcus= good looking guy, black or white, kinda stuck on himself
Bertha= blond, not pretty but confidant
is your research for stereotyping? this should be interesting
