Actually, I temped for awhile as a receptionist for a big pharmaceutical company and got a lot of calls for questions such as yours. Depending on the type of company and the way it is set up, call for either human resources, finances or if they have a department specifically for your situation, talk to them, obviously.
You don't want to walk door to door or call up local branches of companies for corporate donations, because they definitely won't see you or be able to help you. Always call the corporate offices, even if they are located in a totally different state. Make a list of the companies you want to call and if you are able to, find out who you think might be able to help you. Then call and ask if your info is right and if not, who you might be able to speak with.
Good luck!!!

A good idea is to go to a store, or a mall, and set up a table with some people.
Success Guarenteed!
Very good that you are trying to do such a thing, and tell the mall/store your details and why you are doing this, and they will certainly let you fundraise on their property!
Good luck,
Love, R

Write a formal letter and talk to upper management locally. If you can get across to them, how good it would be to support such a noble cause and someone locally they may find it to be a great PR tool.
