There were three versions that I know of:
1. The Byrds (country rock)
2. Doobie Brothers (blues influence with Jesus Is My Friend worked into it as a medley)
3. DC Talk (rap / hiphop version)

Doobie Brothers - when I was a kid and that song was on the radio all the time, I always wondered if it meant that Jesus was JUST all right - that He was OK, but not that great, versus, "Jesus is REALLY great" I still don't know.

There were several versions in the early 70s, I think the most popular was by the Doobie Br's.
