Wrapped in plastic as air-tight as possible and kept as cold as possible. This will preserve leather indefinitely. There are Woolly Mammoth carcasses that have remained nearly as fresh as when they were recently killed for over 8,000 years using a similar state of environmental control.

The best way to store a leather couch is to use it. Wrapping it in plastic is a no no. Covering it with a cloth is better so it can breath and stay dust free and normal room temp. is preferred. If you can't leave it with a friend, sell it. A cellar will mold it and so will moisture. Have any eye doctor friends that could use it in their waiting room? It would be good to clean it and rub it down before storing, cover with blanket or sheets and Bubble pack it if you have to use plastic.
