No, the Golden Gate bridge does not open up. It's 220 feet from the bottom of the bridge to "mean higher high water" -- basically high tide. Low tide means there is more clearance. There are no ships that tall, so no need to open up.
Bridges that open in the middle are called "drawbridges", and come in a great variety of styles and shapes.

No need...any ship currently in use can easily clear the roadway of the Golden Gate Bridge, which is 220 ft above the sea.
The world's tallest warships... the Nimitz Class aircraft carriers, are only 134 ft. in height.
And the tallest passenger liner, the Queen Mary 2 clocks in at 135 ft. in height.

no the golden gate bridge doesnt open in the middle like a draw bridge..Can you imagine what would happen to a draw bridge that big during a earthquake

nope! there's no way, the golden gate is tall enough that any size ship could make it thru and still leave a long distance between the bridge and the ship.
