* more sun
* try liming the yard
* if the problem is severe, remove the topmost layer of soil, spread fresh topsoil and reseed

Definitely sounds like a moisture problem. Fungi and mosses grow in areas high in moisture. Try to increase sunlight to your yard by pruning your trees. Also get a soil test done. You may have a high pH, which moss likes to grow in. Do not water your backyard in the problem areas since it doesn't sound like it is drying out. This will help reduce both the fungus and the moss.

If the light from the cut down trees isn't helping, again reduce watering. If that still doesn't help, you may have a drainage issue. Maybe try planting a groundcover that can survive better than the grass.

Letting in more light helps. There is also a product that is made to kill off the moss. My yard is also very shady but I want the trees. I use the moss killer early in the spring, then I plant grass seed in all the areas that become bare. A full yard of grass is the best defense.

For the moss, spread lime on it. Your PH is off.

More light would help, but you could also plant more grass that is a shade variety.
