For the same reason people adore Pele even though he intentionally broke a player's leg (in a club match in Brazil, apparently) or Maradona even though he scored a goal with his hand. When you become a legend, people will stick by your side, no matter what.
Plus, all those who were supporting France like to delude themselves thinking that France would be the Champions now, if only Zidane wasn't sent off. They'd rather think it was Materazzi's trash talk (or Italy's strategy) that brought France to their defeat.
P.S. - To Shivers quoting my words:
Yes, France dominated for the second half. Zidane almost scored a second goal for France, but Italy also scored a second goal that was invalidated because it was offside. I agree with you that France played better if that means that they had more ball possession and were attacking more, but Italy were still defending strongly - and when they made a mistake, Buffon was there - and counterattacking. They both deserved to win, but only one could. I'm glad it was Italy because they lost several times in critical matches on penalty shootouts. I'm sorry for the French, but that's how it goes. I do think, however, that some French fans indulge in self-delusion because they just can't accept it.

From what I remember (though I might be wrong), he did not kick the opponent in the groin. The opponent did not trash talk him either. The opponent was on the ground due to a correct tackle or a slide towards the ball. Zidane "wiped his right foot" on the player, so to speak, since his other foot (left foot) was caught in between the opponent's legs. In any case, he gave him a kick along the backside, probably out of impatience. That incident was not as serious or shocking as the head butt though.

Actually, France didn't win, because they simply couldn't finish the last touch in front of goal. They, however, clearly had the better opportunities and controlled the second half and overtime; in other words they played most of the match BETTER than Italy did. I, however, don't know whether Zidane staying in the match would have changed much. Italy was more lucky that day and Trezeguet was simply unlucky. That's all there is to it.

due here`s the deal. I have been playing soccer since i was 2 and watching it since i was one. Italians are the ludacris thing to come to fifa because that is thier strategy (congrats to pople who "guessed" right). They don`t care about any sportsmanship and their coach is an asshole. I know that the coach and italians themselves have been screaming since they came into fifa, curse him!, or insult him!, or etc...... They ticked me off and whenevr there was an italian game, i hoped they lost.
Thing is, in this world cup, they didnt lose at all. I bet most of u dont no this but there`s no more zidane in fifa...he`s retiring. And just 4 his goodbye present, the Italians insult his race, his mom, dad, and family, and everything else in france. I would get so ticked off. If u still dont believe that he should of kepot his temp. down, then this might help u.
Imagine if u were play street soccer in a poor neighborhood(especially here in colombia;phew!, theres a lot of street futbol here, theres lines of teams to play) these peole call u a f***ing soccer player who doesn`t know soccer at all and ur whole family sucks his a**, and everyone would say, Mierda!... or damn!.... he dissed u and u r standing there being laughed at what wood u do... would just cry walk away or would u stand up and fight phisically or with words..... that was the situation for zidane.... italian teamates were laughing at him after materazzi told him that and zidane got pissed; pissed because it was his last game and that some1 would try to hurt him. And now if u still dont care for zidane, then this might help u.
U HAVE NO CONCIONCE OR SOUL IN U OR U R A GOODY 2 SHOES!!!!!!!! There`s my answer... and if u want to be sure and everything i said is true, search it up and it will say practically what i have said...

Frenchmen are the worst losers, they are making this issue political, if I were French ! THANK GOD I'M NOT, I would be mad as hell with Zidane getting the red card and jeopardizing our chances to win...People are so stupid the Guy is a legend in French soccer and he's getting away with a disgraceful act , he didn't even apologize to his team or nation (makes him very proud to play for the French, I wonder) , but is sorry to all the kids had to watch , wake up!!! you Jerks I don't understand why people fall for celebrity status, nobody is above the Law...The guy is laughing all the way to the bank , this has made more famous than if France would of won, his clothing line is selling like hot cakes, Adidas will probably come out with a retirement shoe and make a fortune and stupid people will buy it... When Totti spit on that player in the last World Cup he got red carded , I thought it was so unnecessary , I wanted Totti never to play for Italy, Inzaghi got another red card for stupidity , I wanted him out of the line up for good,,Zidane has a breaker fuse that pops once in a while , this time it POPED and he screwed himself, his team, and his Nation, so Frenchmen accept defeat, and don't blame the world...

The man needs anger management. Stupid people are on his side. Many players (not just footballers) talk trash to one another. Zidane was just a big baby about it. He can't take the talk.
