One day I discovered a horrific infestation of Brown Widow Spiders (yes, brown) on my back porch. My dog had apparently been bitten at least once, and had to have a huge subsequent cyst removed. Nothing seemed truly effective at their complete annihilation, until I tried a plant-based enzyme cleaner as a last resort. Not only did it fry those bad boys and their egg sacs, the residue of the cleaner (after thorough rinsing) kept away any re-infestation. Since then, I use it like Kryptonite and spiders and ants obey the spray.
I got a zillion red ant bites on my foot one day, and happened to have some of the cleaner on hand. I sprayed the ants off, and this process seemed to prevent any pustules or lesions from forming at the bites. Apparently the enzyme messes with the ant protein that dissolves flesh. Cool!
This stuff is non-toxic and cheap, about $7.00 for a month's supply. It's called eco-H from Ecoquest International. The manufacturers are not even aware of its effectiveness on bugs.

That is a very hard thing to do. I try to put triazicide around the foundation and spray the lawn around the house with insecticide. It's easier to kill them once there in the house. I close a room and use bug foggers, blocking the area under the door with a towel. Some foggers now have a very pleasant odor, but they work great. My wife hates spiders and I did our extra room just yesterday.

Bengal! I is what I spray in my own house every 6 months; even across the threshold of my doors. It is somewhat expensive, but it works and is also guaranteed. If any insect manages to get in they die in a short time.

Don't open the door when they knock. Seriously...get a dehumidifier to get rid of the moisture that attracts them....
