In addition to getting rid of fruit and other possible
food sources or using sticky traps, another thing
works fairly well. Try setting out saucers of beer
or something else alcoholic. They will tend to fly
into it and die. Actually a glass might be better.
With a small amount of liquid at the bottom you
can clap your hand over the top of the glass and
swish it around a bit. This will catch the flies that
are sitting on the inside of the glass.

This method may take a few days to get rid of the
problem, but I have used it to good effect.

We used to have a real problem with fruit flies. What finally worked was getting rid of all the fruit we had in the house, including the stuff in the fridge (tomatoes too). We then waited about a week or two before we brought any more fruit into the house. After that, we always stored fruit inside the refrigerator or in the freezer, and we always disposed of old fruit by putting it in the outside garbage can. The fruit flies all died out and we never had a problem again.

When I've had trouble w/fruit flies, I've made sure I don't have any fruit sitting out on the counter (refrigerate or store in plastic at room temp) and I empty the trash every day rather than once or twice a week (plastic grocery bags are a good size for this). Also make sure you don't let any peelings sit in the sink or garbage disposal. About a week of making sure they didn't have any food sources available to them usually eliminated the problem for us.

Also check the produce carefully when you grocery shop... it seemed like some grocery stores had more of a problem w/fruit flies than others and I was bringing them home. Bleah.

i would get one of those sticky fly catcher things and hang it up for a few days and they will land on it and it will be the end of them.
