I went to Sonic tonight without any cash, so I paid with my credit card and couldn't tip the carhop, for like the first time in my life ever. And it felt kind of awkward...so are you supposed to tip carhops at Sonic?

I always do, those poor girls and guys work their butts off walking all day! If you just missed this one time don't feel bad about it....but don't do it again (LOL)

I have more often than not NOT tipped them, they dont make a whole lot of money in tips per day and I can guarantee that they dont count on it to support their families. If you get exceptional service, a friendly carhop or fast delivery then you should tip and tip well. Otherwise I wouldnt feel bad about it, its not necessary. Heres some rules of thumb about tipping:
Tip These people:
Waiters-15-20%
Hair dressers-10%
Baristas (The girl who makes your coffee at starbucks)use your judgment, if you order something really complicated, throw in more but generally 50 cents is good.
Valets a dollar or so
Any person who carts your luggage (be it in a hotel or airport)- A dollar or so
Hosts/hostesess- you dont have to tip them but if they give you a really good table i would.
Cab drivers- 10%

The general idea is that if someone provides you a service you tip them. These people dont make a whole lot of money and your tips make up for that gap. I make about 20 dollars a day in tips at starbucks and they are split between 7 other people! So thats 140 dollars that people give into the tip jar per 8 hour period. I have to laugh if someone orders something that is ridiculously complicated and they throw in 2 pennies REALLY hard so it makes a lot of noise ROFL
Thats all I can think of for now.

I had the same problem! I told the girl that I was sorry for not having anythign to tip her with and she just smiled and said "next time". I guess they would like to get tipped like any other but then again I bet that not many people tip the people at mcdonalds. But I know.. the Sonic carhops actually walk your food to you.

I guess next time just keep a little cash with ya.

No you do not "have to tip" As someone who was a Sonic carhop I can say that we appreciate the extra money but something most people dont know is that where a waitress is only paid per hour about half of what minimum wage is( in my state a waitress only has to be paid $2.13 per hour) A carhop is paid at least minum wage. Also Ive worked at Sonic in 2 different states and got paid at least minimum wage both places. And Ive waited tables in 3 different restraunts and got paid crap but with the tips added in made way more than what minimum wage was.

Yes. I have had several friends work there and they are paid like waitresses (rely on tips). The new credit card thing stinks, so I always bring a couple dollars to make sure I can tip.

Yes, ofcourse! There should have been a place on the bill giving you the opportunity to leave a gratuity. Those kids work hard for their money in all kinds of weather, so reward them, tip them atleast 15 percent.

OMG..i never did... they walked it to my car, I mean if I'm gonna tip someone shouldn't I tip the person who cooked it, and its not like an eating-in place, they don't come back for refills, or even to take the trash??? So I never did... oh well...

Yes. You tip anyone that brings food to you. The only difference is you sit in your and eat in stead of in the restaurant.

I never have, but I know several people do. I know that they definitely appreciate it. But, it is their job and they are being paid to do it. And, all they do is walk out to your car, give you food, and take your money.
