Clarification: are you trying to learn accounting, or are you keeping the books for an organization?

If you're trying to learn, there's really no substitute for practice. Do all the practice exercises you can, and compare your answers with the book's. Many universities also have accounting clubs that can hook you up with a tutor. Some are free, some are paid, but they are usually fellow students a year or two ahead of you who have been where you are and understand your frustrations. I'm working on a accounting-made-simple website, similar to SparkNotes, but given that it's an unpaid project being undertaken by a public accountant, it's taking a long time to get built.

If you're an accountant at a business, I can only recommend one of many computer accounting systems. Smaller businesses can use QuickBooks or Peachtree, and larger organizations either custom-build their systems or have it integrated into their Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. Either way, these systems structure things to guide you through transactions.

Are you taking a class or doing the books for your business? Take a few deep breaths. Accounting is actually pretty logical if you aren't scared of it. It seems so complicated on the surface that many people look at it and think "its beyond me", but if you approach it with the thought that you will conquer it and not the other way around, I think you'll find you can handle it.

If you are approaching accounting in regards to a business, your business or your personal finances. It can be tough. With so many laws, regulations. As well as so much information out there and the time to search through it and really get it. I found one thing that helped me out was access to a bussiness service that helped me out with this, along with a few other areas. It was the best thing that I have found for the price.
