I'm getting my first tattoo on saturday and am a little worried, I want to get it on my hip area and I'm just so scared that it's going to hurt. I've always wanted one and I'm going for dog paws going down...Can anyone honestly tell me how much it hurts? Is it bearable? And I'm planning on getting a perfectly toned tummy and if all goes well I will get my tattoo made bigger...will this look ok as it isn't all in one? Thanks in advance for your answers!

I had my first tattoo when i was sixteen (i know i shouldn't have)!

It was a chinese symbol meaning family at the base of my spine.

I can't really remember it hurting actually but I do remember it being a very irrating and uncomfortable situation.

Since that time I have had my husband's name written just above that which hurt quite a lot; more than i remember.

I have been told however that this particular tattoo artist really goes deep and that's why it hurt far more than my first one.

Don't be afraid to ask them to stop if it gets a little too unbearable - the first minute hurts the most but after that the pain subsides as your skin 'shuts off' to the pain if you like and you don't feel it as much.

When they do tattoo you, they will dip the pen in ink and then 'do you' (pardon the expression) for about ten seconds and then release to wipe away the blood and re-ink.

Once they take the pen off it doesn't hurt anymore but aches a little like a *** burn if you have ever had one.

Do not plan to do any specific on the day that you are having it done as you will be rather sore and tender after a few hours but this wears off pretty quickly.

Whatever you do don't be tempted to pick the scab once it forms - my friend did this and it is a right state now even though she went back to have it re-done and she said (quote on quote) that it 'hurt like hell' when they tattooed the same area again as effectively it is a scar on top of a scar.

I hope all goes well for you - perhaps take some boiled sweets with you as they say that sucking on something and keeping your mouth moist keeps you occupied and helps eleviate the pain - i did this and it did help a little.

Best of luck.x.

Getting a tattoo is bearable. I have 3. And the one on my shoulder is about 2-3 inches wide and long. I also have one on my ankle and one on my lower back. It will hurt i wont lie but its bearable so dont stress too much. Its not as bad as youd think itd be. Theres gonna be people that are gonna get on here and tell you not to get a tattoo and that its a mistake but its not. As long as it can be covered when you go to work its no biggy. Just do what makes you happy! Good luck!

Hey,

I have a black dragon up my spine and i was very scared like urseldf to be honest i think the thought is much worse. Anyways u need to relax wen getting it done otherwise its harder to do! Think of it like a burning sensation not agony and u will be fine dont dwell on the pain, as before everyone has different thresholds but although it hurt its worth it and its a pain that goes away. Its not unbearable. Please dont get the big paw sounds nasty i think u should get the little ones they r nice anyways good luck! x

i have two. i got my first tatoo on my lower hip for my 16th birtday( im 19). i got a little pink heart with a black design. i think smaller ones are more suttle and sexier on that region.it took 10 mins and didnt hurt as the area goes a bit numb . it was sore to touch the next day but after that it was fine... keep utting the cream you get on it for two weeks and dont sunbath or have a bath either showers only for like a week

of course it hurts. it's a needle breaking the first few layers of skin many times. but, on the hip area?? shouldnt be too bad. dont do the back of the neck, i have one there and oohhh, let me just tell you, that was some funky business. however, you dont feel it so much after a little while, it kinda goes numb. i also have one on my forearm, that didnt feel like much but pain doesnt bother me. that makes a difference. i like watching the doctor give me shots, its amusing to me. oh, and dont go drunk either. big mistake. plus you'll bleed more, makes your blood thin. basically, if you wanna do it, dont worry about pain, it's temporary, JUST DO IT. hope i've been partially helpful.

Can't tell you if it will hurt as I have never had the courage to get one. I tell myself that although tat's look great when newly done they don't look so good in 20 years time when they have faded and lost colour and my skin will be less toned. So by all means get one done but have a long hard think about the future before that.

Sure it nips a bit & if its on a less than fleshy area it can hurt more but is TOTALLY worth it.
I have quite a few now & the ones on my feet hurt the most but if you're really terrified of the pain you can ask your ink grinder to use a numbing cream. Ask about it first, but seriously, you have nothing to worry about, you'll be so proud of yourself once its done & you'll be a fully fledged tattoo warrior!
Don't forget to take good care of your new ink & NEVER, EVER pick it.
I bet you'll have 6 more by Christmas!!!
Good luck. x

it hurts a little, i won't lie.... but if it hurt that bad, i'm sure so many people wouldn't have them. black hurts the worst... but it's not exactly pain that hurts. it's more like pain that just frustrates you.

so, here I am, five tattoos later... planning my next few...

it's not bad at all. :-)

but make sure this is what you want. think, in 30 years, you'll be a grand parent w/ a giant tattoo of something you have regretted for the last 30 years. :-) keep it in mind.

Its a weird sort of pain that doesn't last that long as you get use to the sound and the feeling of the needle moving on your skin.Don't get a big tattoo if its your first one as i have seen a mate getting a large tattoo done and he was in tears cos of the pain.

I can't say it won't hurt. When I decided to get one I only lasted the first five seconds. Hey I'm not big on pain either. Just be prepared for pain and then again it affects everyone differently. It's your body and your pain only you'll know once it happens.GOD bless
