I believe that she's Lionel Richie's adopted daughter, so who knows. I do recall seeing childhood pics of her looking like she had an afro. Either way, it really makes no difference.

She smoked marijuana, cocaine, and heroin; was arrested thrice; and had five car accidents. Not until she went into drug rehabilitation in 2003 did Richie and her parents have an open conversation about her addiction. "I'm now, at 24, just learning to deal with my problems instead of concealing them with drugs," she said in the interview.

I'm not entirely sure. She's adopted. Her mother was a backstage assistant for Lionel Richie and her father was a drummer that worked with him. It doesn't say what their races were.
One website lists her ethnicity as Caucasian, Black Creole and Hispanic extraction. However, that website lists her biological father as Pete Escovedo, who was rumored to be her biological father, but really was not.
It's really just a big mystery what her ethnicity really is.

Her skin color is white.
Her race: ok if her mother is white and her adoptive father is black then doesn't that make her just white, unless her biological father is black then she's a combo.
it's just this whole big mysterious-confusing -knot thing that no one can stump!! that's all nicole richie really is.

Nicole is multi-racial. Lionel Richie is her adoptive father, not her biological father. Her biological father is Peter Michael Escovedo.
