I live in Mississippi and we are having a moderate drought. What would be the best thing to do to make them turn out the best as possible?

It sounds like they got too much water too quickly. This can especially happen when there is a drought. Watermellons and tomatos need the amount of water they get to be consistent or they will tend to crack. Another thing you can do is shade the mellons. Put a gunny sack over the mellon itself and not the plant. This will help keep the rine soft and malleable. The sun during a drought will tend to dry the rine out and make it hard, then when it gets plenty of water CRACK!

Hi,
It sounds like your melons got too much water too fast. Feed them with a good fertilizer & let them dry out again.

Here is a site for growing melons commercially in MS. It has good information on pests, planting time and nutrients.

They need water. If that is not possible try duct tape.
