It is a code that is given when you purchase something or pay a bill. If they need to pull up your records, just give them the code and they pull it up by that.

When you do business with someone, they may give you a special code called a confirmation code that they will ask for later on if you need any additional help.

If you buy an airline ticket, the airlines or travel agent will give you a confirmation code that you can use later on when it is time to check in for your flight.

Generally, a confirmation code is a unique string of numbers and letters that make it easy for a business to jump directly to your record when you have a question about a transaction you carried out with them.

A code that verifies the identity of the user (making sure that a hijacker or hacker is not the person trying to access).

These are often in a box that is made to be difficult to read unless the intended user is doing the reading.

It can also reference an acknowledgement email, and used as a receipt number to access your particular information.
