It is always speculated about, but what actually happens in places like Amsterdam? Does the number of domestic users go down or up? What about employment, average wages, etc.?

Anyone know of any research that has been done on the subject? I'm sure it's out there, I just don't know where.

The people can get a huge tax break.
In fact if you mean all drugs then we would not have to pay any taxes at all.

If recreational drugs like marijuana and heroin were legal, the death rate from overdoses would probably decrease and they would be safer, overall for users to obtain. If prostitution were legalized, prostitutes could charge better rates and collect the money legally from the buyers of sex and get better health care. However, many pimps would then, go out of business because they would no longer be needed for protection, as a whore could then, call the police without the fear of being arrested. I do not know much about business in Amsterdam.

The government will have a viable industry to tax. Some that were previously unemployable have potential at becoming wage earners again. Those that did both before will continue to be users. Those that were against before will continue to be against it.

The crime rate drops significantly. Tax revenues increase significantly as the underground economy is legitimized.

Whenever you legalize something the desire goes down(human nature). By legalizing these activities the Govt. also collects taxes on the income and profits. Also there is no black market.
