The vernier callipers allows a least reading of 0.001" or in the case of 0.01 mm in the normal circumstances. Still more accurate measurements can be had with better least count vernier calipers. Where accuracy is required vernier calipers will be used based on required accuracy levels.

The vernier caliper can measure upto 100th part of one milimeter whereas the lowest calibration of a scale is merely 1 mm. This shows how accurate a caliper can be. So, caliper has an edge over ordinary scale because of more accuracy.

Rulers and meters sticks are highly inaccurate, mostly because of human error. One may over or underestimate an objects size whereas with a caliper it is kinda obvious when you can't move it any closer. Not to mention the increased precision.
