SO FAR YOU ARE ALL WRONG.
(sorry I just want to make sure my answer isn't overlooked)
A duvet is NOT the same thing as a duvet cover or the cover you put on a comforter. Duvets are not used in America but are very common in Europe and are the most common form of bed covering in northern Europe.
They are similar to comforters but they are much thicker and are the only covering used on the bed, you use one instead of a combination of sheets and blankets, they are filled with polyester, you put a cover on it.

Duvet Covers are used to decorate and protect down filled comforters and blankets. They work like giant pillow cases and usually have a button or tie enclosure at one end. The Covers can be washed easily and so protect your comforter.

Yes, a duvet cover protects your comforter from stain and odor. It is also more decorative than most comforters. It's worth the investment, especially if your comforter is expensive (down-filled, etc.).
