Well, i think all animals should have names if you own them, no matter what they are. It took my brother and his girlfriend 2 and a half weeks to name their dog but it still had a name didn't it? they called her no name when they where deciding so they still named it something!

I believe that a Tortoise could be taught to recognize a name. But, how useful would it be??? I mean, a tortoise is not going to fetch or come running and jump in your lap.
Then again, I am the kind of person that would ask, "Why would anybody keep a turtle as a pet, anyway?"

Naming something is not necessarily so that it will come when called. It can be to make one feel that the animal or thing is not just a random object.
I might call a tortoise "Mmmm ... Pie!" or maybe "Teach". "Fast" might be a good descriptive name, because it tends to stick fast in one place.

I thought tortoises were a protected species? So your mate had better call it something like Precious or even Fluffy.
