I have eight tanks. You are supposed to clean them once a week but I sometimes go months without cleaning them and they do find. Be careful not to overfeed.

goldfish tend to be a little messy. so you might want to go ahead and do a weekly 20% water change. and keep an eye on the filter to see how well it is cleaning the water. it might need to be changed more often then recommended. if the water if becoming cloudy. try not to over feed your fish. because that can be as bad as not cleaning the filter or changing the water. you might lose one or both of the fish if the tank has not been seasoned properly. you can google the nitrogen cycle to learn more about maintaining a healthy aquarium for your fish.
luckily goldfish are strong. so i hope they make it through the initial setup. if they dont. i would recommend starting out by changing 95 percent of the water, then with only one tiny goldfish. to get the aquarium started. you can also get some gravel from the fish store to help get your tank started. also. they can test your water to tell you if its ready or not. and help you chose a good fish for the size of your tank.
good luck!
ps . i like fish!

I raised goldfish for many years -- in 10, 15 or 30 gallon tanks, with filtration, and aeration. I even kept some of them in bowls, with NO aeration and no filtration. I cleaned their tanks (and filters twice a week, their bowls a little more often, and they lived for a long time. I fed them more than just "goldfish" flake food", sometimes even treating them to Tetra Color Flake food, Tubifex Freeze Dried Worms or Brownie crumbs! The prima donnas (yes, some goldfish have attitude!) used to toss their heads at me like snobbish debutantes whenever they saw me (except when they tossed their heads, they'd toss their whole body). The homicidal maniacs, I kept separate in their own tanks, until they passed on from natural causes thus enabling their separated former tank mates to also do the same! But in the long run, most of the fish got along with each other, and when I'd stop by the tank to say hi, it was a wonderful sight to see them all lined up looking at me and wiggling, giving little silent "goldfish barks", demanding to be fed.

Every week, but if you let it slip and forget, no less than every two weeks.
