i agree with traderbobday except for one thing-your trans is an axod, not an aod. he is right about the cooler lines. they should be cleaned thoroughly or you will be throwing good money away. my suggestion is to go to a wrecking yard for a good used one. ( if there is such a thing for fords.) but you must still clean your cooler lines. this is a cheaper alternative to overhaul which i might add for $1500 is not bad. where i am we get $2000 or more for any overhaul of a front wheel drive. so let`s review: overhaul is too expensive for a 17 year old car-- junkyard would be lots cheaper but don`t forget the cooler lines and a new filter, or you could just sell it to the navy for a spare boat anchor for the uss nimitz. your choice. good luck

No offense to your car. Wait until dark and back up as far away as you can and then walk home.

Otherwise...I belive that is the AOD trany, which is very exspensive to work on for a car that age. This next piece of advice is most important and applies to all cars. If you chose to work on it the folling must be done, or don't bother. After the trany is fixed the cooling tank(in the radiator) and the lines that feed it must be replaced(avoid flushing, a shop will tell you flushing is OK) Look at the cost for flushin and replacement.

The reason for replacing the cooler: When the trany failed, it saw contanmination. So, you spend $1500 or more on a new trany and run it on components that are contaminated. It will work just fine. It will work long enough to make it past the warranty, then your stuck again.

If you drive in reverse long enough the odometer will go backwards and restore the transmission to a date before it died.

Or use the FORD System Restore Hamer!

Sorry, I coul not help myself. :-) Smile

begin looking for a new car....assuming that you have transmission fluid in the system, your transmission is shot...not worth fixing on a 17 year old car

I would say drive in reverse any where you go. That way you will stop putting miles in your car.
