In Florida you have to have an equvilent of an AA degree.
(or 2 years of college.)
I started as teacher assistant in 1994. Then all you had to have was a
High School diploma. Since then, we have had to take a test to see if we qualify .

Generally, you will have more success finding a position if you have some classes like child & adolescent psychology, and other education related classes, however, all states and districts have different requirements for their hiring.
Be aware that federal legislation is impacting the teaching assistants just like it is impacting teachers, and you may have to take some tests to show you are "Highly Qualified" for working with students.
Also, there may be extra or special training or certification required if your school of choice is a Title I school, or has some other special distinction.
Check with your district about the specific testing and certification requirements. Most have websites you can research.
If you have a local community college you could ask them what classes are generally taken by people interested in the same position.

I was a teacher's assistant for the past two years. although i liked working with the children (2nd grade) i worked just as hard as the teacher and got paid less than half of what she did. My advice would be to check into what your state requires for you to become a certified teacher. I only needed to have a high school diploma although i have a master's in christian education. needless to say i am currently getting certified to become a teacher. if you're going to do it . . . go ALL the way. you can also go to: www.ets.org (educational testing service) for state requirements to become certified.

It has a lot to do with where you are from. the best thing to do is call your local board of educ. and i am sure someone there can tell you all you need to know.
