Well, personally I think that you should dress for you- the way you feel comfortable and what you like- and not anybody else. But I can definitely understand where you're coming from.
What do you mean by edgy? Because my suggestion to you would be this: start building a more varied wardrobe. If all you have in your closet are cardigans, baby tees and dress shirts, and jeans, then that's probably why you get labeled as preppy. Look into buying more things that branch out from that style. Start going to vintage and thrift stores. If you live near a city, head into some more bohemian and ethnic areas. You'll find great bargains on unique clothing. Buy a printed cotton skirt from India, pair it with a simple tshirt and a cute pair of sandals. Try buying a large piece of funky jewelry and a pair of shoes that are similar and maybe a few bracelets. Look into making your own clothes.
I have been doing this for as long as I can remember and I always get a lot of complements on my clothes because often I pick things that have a global influence or that someone else might be a little scared to wear.
I know it might be hard, but if you want to get away from that preppy style, you have to stop shopping at your normal stores. See what else is out there. The problem with "preppy" clothes and trends are that so many people follow them and they don't see any room for individuality. Once you try some new things and discover your own personal style, you'll be a lot happier.

Try Forever 21, or Hot Topics
(ok, maybe not THAT edgy...) BUT hot topics has cool t-shirts and cool jeans. Maybe you can find some edgy jewelry there too.

Don't let stereotypes get to you. They're stupid and over rated. But go for more black and arm bands. And wild colors. I got big into barb wire for a while so look for barb wire jewlery. Or create your own style, like you could do a vintage theme or something like that.

well lets see, if ya wanna go for the Hood look, there is always the trusty do rag (bandanna), Jeans and tee shirt and tennis shoes. or the redneck look, jeans, or bibs, tee shirt ,ball cap and tennis shoes. or how about jeans, tee shirt, and a ball cap, it doesnt matter what ppl look like on the outside, its whats on the inside that really counts. just as long as you are true to your self it shouldnt matter what others think about you. look at it this way if they dont like you because of what you wear, then they are not your friends, dont be a fake person just to impress ppl and to make them like you. if they still judge you then you dont need them.

Go to a store and get what catches your eye... Don't get clothes just because they're in style, just be who you are.
