as a native san diegan i can tell you there are a million things to do here, you just have to know where to look! you say you're coming in October, there are several oktoberfests depending on when you are going to be here. world class beaches, silver strand for one. the boardwalk at mission beach with the wooden rollercoaster. coronado island with the hotel del coronado where the movie some like it hot was filmed starring marilyn monroe. take a ferry to catalina islands. the cabrillo monument. the corvette diner. also at that time of year there are always haunted houses or trails set up in preparation for halloween. the san diego zoo or wild animal parks. there are vineyards to visit in north county, i believe some of them even offer balloon rides. you can take a pedicab through the historic gaslamp district in downtown. balboa park has tons of museums, a rose garden (I got married there). the midway museum is a former aircraft carrier turned into a museum down by seaport village. you can take the coaster up the coast to different beaches. if you're a shopper, there's TONS of malls and outlet centers. sea world is always fun. old town san diego is where san diego first got it's start (if you like mexican food go to Old Town Mexican Cafe). the whaley house is also located in old town (supposedly one of the most "haunted" places in the united states.) there are indian casinos in the north and east counties. you can catch a padres game at the new petco park, there are usually still outdoor concerts going on around that time. there's a small historic mountain town called julian (they have the best apple pie up there!) I think october is the time that they do the apple festival too. there's also the palomar mountain observatory. a lot of people go to tijuana for bargain shopping while they are on vacation here. there's another place called the chula vista nature center that i believe has a lot of animals and plants native to southern california. there are harbor day cruises, some of which offer dinners. we are also only about 2 hours from disneyland and magic mountain. legoland is only a hop & a skip away. there are also lots of clubs and night life if you're interested in that. i could go on and on, but i'm getting a cramp from typing. our local newspaper usually has all the listings of things going on. you can find it at www.signonsandiego.com hope this helps, feel free to email me with questions! welcome to san diego! :)

Fun things to do in San Diego - it really depends on what you like to do, and who you are with.
During the day, here are some fun things to do in San Diego:
Check out some cool outdoor places - there are many different beaches in San Diego, each with their own best features. Some are good for surfing, others are good for sunbathing and people watching. Others are good for walks or snorkeling or taking the family.
Other daytime fun might include visiting the San Diego Zoo, located in Balboa Park. Balboa Park also houses several nice museums and gardens. You can also take in the view from Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma or the Presidio hill just above Old Town State Park or the ocean view at Torrey Pines State Reserve. For unique shopping experiences, check out downtown La Jolla, or Seaport Village (on San Diego Bay) or for serious shopping, go to Horton Plaza (downtown) or outlet shopping in Carlsbad, Viejas, or San Ysidro. There are also many resorts for tennis and golf. For the kids, you can go to Legoland in Carlsbad, or Sea World. There's also plenty of opportunities for sailing, day hikes, surf kayakking, mountain biking and rock climbing.
At night, there are lots of great restaurants and clubs in the Gaslamp Quarter (downtown), and some more nice restaurants in Little Italy (downtown). Pacific Beach's bars are popular with college students for drinking, and Hillcrest has a trendy nightlife, and is the center of the region's gay and lesbian community. Ocean Beach has a more laid back nightlife. Old Town has some nice tourist-oriented Mexican places with good food and big margaritas. There's lots of movie theaters around town, and also some decent performing arts venues - for concerts, and plays.

I was there for the week of Memorial Day and I would HIGHLY recommend the zoo. Even as you are walking from exhibit to exhibit, it is like you are walking in a rainforest due to all the exotic foliage. Most exhibits are set up in such a way, that although the animals have room to move around, you feel as if you can see all of them so easily and close up. I think if I had tried I could have reached down into the MeerKat pen and actually touched one of them! :) The Polar Bear exhibit was also incredible. You could go inside a building and watch them swimming and playing underwater. You were literally face to face with them. I could have spent an hour or more just watching them. I t was awesome.

Sea World is more like an amusement park. There are more rides, and it's good for someone who doesn't have a great attention span (I'm not saying that's you, ok?!!!) If you have only 3-4 hours, you'll feel that you accomplished a lot.
Education-wise, Sea World has an obvious edge in the aquatic, marine life department. So, you have to factor that in if you like sea animals.
The Zoo has a lot more to offer, if you have more time. The Park is huge, and there's just so much more to take in -- not just animals, but plant life, two immense bird "cages", and yes, there are shows. Parking is free, unlike Sea World.
Outside the Zoo, you've got Balboa Park, with museums, the planetarium, space theatre, and nice restaurants.
If you are coming from the north (or staying in the northern part of San Diego), there's the San Diego Wild Animal Park -- and that's even bigger, with animals living in their own natural habitat.
Which one is better? Personally, I'd go with the Zoo. There are Sea Worlds in other states, along with other marine parks. But there is only ONE San Diego Zoo. Very few zoos in America compare to San Diego.

If you go into any major hotel they usually have a rack full of places to see and do. Some even offer discounts to! The choice is up to you.
