Everyone is talking about how castor oil will quicken the progression into labor... I have heard that castor oil may hurt the baby (painful bowels), and I do not want to put her through that just so I can have her. I want her now more than anything, but taking the chance of her hurting like that is not at all worth it. Don't get me wrong. I want to wait until she is ripe and ready, but everyone is telling me to consider castor oil. I would much rather stick to walking and doing "the deed," but I'm sick of hearing about it and how great it works. Does anyone have any advice for me? Has anyone ever used castor oil, and if so, was it a good or bad experience? Thanks everyone! :)

My midwife said the caster oil won't hurt the baby but in can put you in tons of discomfort. I used a very very tiny amount when I was so constipated I couldn't take it anymore. It was just 1/8 of a tsp. I woke up about 6 hours after taking with contractions that really hurt. I drank a ton of water and took a tylenol and after about two hours they went away. The worst part was I never did get the laxative effect. Watermelon ended up being my answer there.

I read that evening primrose oil is good to take and not dangerous at all. It helps the cervix ripen. Pineapple is also supposed to be great, you want to eat a ton of it. Oh, my midwife also said the nipple stimulation is good, but it's better if you use a hand held breast pump, not manual stimulation, because the manual doesn't often get the uterus contracting enough. Just be very careful, wait between two to five minutes between stimulation to make sure you don't over contract the uterus. Eating oregano is also supposed to help...thus the eggplant parm theory.

Good old fashioned walking, swaying the hips, water aerobics, etc are always safe and may help. My grandfather took my grams for a boat ride when she was due, that worked for them.

Who knows what any of these might really do to help, it may just be timing. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, the time will come when that little girl comes into this world, it may seem like forever now but before you know it she will be walking, talking and getting into all sorts of trouble and you will think back on this day and laugh.

I would not take the Castor oil. If the people around you are pressuring you then tell them that it would not be health for the baby to have it to early. When it is time for you to have her, you will,.Babies do a lot of growing in the last too weeks before birth. Don't try and rush things, it will happen soon enough for you. Just keep walking and drink lots of water. Good luck and Congratulations on your new daughter.

You waited how long? You can wait a little longer. Your baby will tell you when he/she is ready. Castor oil? Skip it. Instead, exorcise, go for walk or even swimming will help. Your baby is easier to care for inside your womb, so don't rush it!! Good luck with the new baby, and god bless.

sincerely,
a mommy of three

Hi: I wish people would stop with their home remedies!! Do as your Doctor tells you and only do what you think is right! You and your baby will have to live with whatever happens using these home remedies. I know being pregnant isn't allot of fun but don't rush your baby, when the time is right she'll let you know. I'm so excited for you!!! I wish I were in your shoes right now. The very best of luck to you and your Baby!!

My birth mom used castor oil with me and she said she was on the toilet forever that night but it made her go into labor and she had me that weekend! (took it on friday)
Don't worry about the baby coming to soon you are already 38 weeks she will be fine.

Castor Oil can make the baby pass meconium (their first poo) while in the womb, which indicates that they go into distress. You could end up in labour, with your bowels goin at the same time....think of the mess!!!! just think, everytime you try and push that baby out, something else comes out instead...do you really want to put up with that embarrassment??

This will sound silly but try going bowling. I have had 3 people I know (a friend, a co-worker and a cousin back east) all go into labor less than a week after a good game of bowling!! Its all natural and worth a try!!

Do nothing. If the baby ain't coming on its own at 41-42 weeks, the docs'll take care of it. What's the rush?

Just enjoy your last few weeks of having uninterupted sleep and do stuff you want to do, like go to the movies and have lunch with friends, because you aren't going to do any of this for a ridiculously long time...
