According to IMDB.com, the producer is the chief of staff of a movie production in all matters save the creative efforts of the director, who is head of the line. A producer is responsible for raising funding, hiring key personnel, and arranging for distributors.

The producer is usually the one who funds the movie and helps the director with the overall production of the picture.

I do beleive he represents the executive producer...otherwise the guy that comes up with the money. He makes descision to help protect the executive producers investment.

There are different types...
Finds money...
Attaches a name actor...
Can assemble a good crew...
Knows how much money thigs cost and where to find them...
