Ugly, bad smelling, filthy, loud, obnoxious... that list of adjectives could apply to a LOT of things...
Men, dogs, cars,.....
Ugly-I agree that there are ugly breeds of dogs (Pugs..), but ugly is oh-so subjective, as are all the descriptors you used.
Bad-smelling- This one is not always the dog's fault- I'd be for blaming the owner for not bathing and grooming...
Filthy- again, this is the owner's responsability- to keep the yard clean, and to attend to grooming.
Loud- Well, dogs will bark. How was the dog trained? Was the dog trained at all? (again, the ball is in the owner's court)
Obnoxious- Still, way too subjective- I don't mind a small dog jumping on me, but if Bethoven (a St. Bernard- huge, hairy, slobery) jumped on me, I'd be a little annoyed.
As a dog-owner, I prevent my dogs from fitting your description.
First, my dogs are always described by others as "cute" or "beautiful" or "good-looking" Thankfully, they have good genes- I pick good puppies!
I, personally, bathe and brush them on a regular basis. I also trim their claws.
As for loud and obnoxious- When I am around, I am grateful that they bark when someone comes to the door- I don't have a doorbell. If someone is threatening me, I sure hope my dogs protect me.... Case in point...
July '05-- My husband was with our (at the time)2-yr old, on his way to pick me up from the theater where I was volunteering. Two teenage boys threw a firecracker at our car. Shela, who has been trained to stay seated in the back seat of the car, jumped over the front seat and hid in the pasenger's foot-space. After my husband stopped the car, she followed him out of the car and placed herself between him and these boys. Her hackles were raised (an adrenal response- the hair raises on her shoulders, sometimes down her spine.) all the way to the base of her tail. She growled and showed her teeth. She was PISSED!!!
Normally this dog is very gentle- she is great with children, infants, the elderly, etc. But- she is also VERY protective- That is her JOB, that is part of why we have her. If she hadn't responded this way, we wouldn't count her as valuable.

A dog is the best friend a man can have in the animal kingdom. If you as a human were urgly, bad smelling, filthy, loud and obnoxious, the dog would probably not take in consideration this "fault" of yours, and would probably wag it's tail at you and be happy to meet you.

Dogs are only as bad, smelly, filthy, loud and obnoxious as their owners allow them to be.
More often than not, the average person simply does not train nor care-for their dog properly.
The jury's still out on the "ugly" - although there are plenty (depending on the breed) that look like they've been run through a woodchipper - and some that SHOULD be run through a woodchipper.
...Don't even get me started on cats!

I wholeheartedly agree! All the 'dog people' I talk to claim that dogs don't smell ... their noses must not work properly. I have never encountered a dog that didn't have that distinctive doggy aroma which is GROSS!
Not to mention the fact that the taller ones always want to stick their noses in your crotch!
I'll keep my cats, thank you very much.

I completely disagree .Dogs are the best, most loyal, and loving companions a person can have! My dog greets me with such love and enthusiasm every time I come home even if I'm gone for only 1minute!
