I'd have to say being overdressed is a better option, especially for a boy. For example, you show up in a shirt tie and slacks and everyone else is wearing polo's... simply take of the tie, undo the button, maybe depending on the cut of the shirt untuck it. YOu can always roll up the sleeves as well which can be kind of stylish. However, if you showed up in a polo and everyone else was wearing dress shirts and ties, you'd be screwed. Another example is you show up in a three piece suit. Everyone else is wearing a shirt and tie. Take of the jacket and maybe the vest (personally I think vests are awesome, so i'd leave it on) wallah. Problem solved.
As I mentioned earlier, however, girls could be a little bit trickier. Don't take me as an expert, because I am a boy, but I would wager it is still your best bet to show up overdressed. You can always modify a little bit, plus you know you look good.
All that said, do of course take into consideration the event. If the event has an invitaion, use that as a guide. If it's scanned/photocopied chances are don't wear your best coctail dress/tux. For nicer invitations, probably better get the suit out. It never hurts to ask someone else who is going or the host either, safety in numbers. I'd say make your best guess - lean to the dressier side - and be confident no matter what.

I am chronic underdresser, I dress down, I don't apologize. T-shirt, jeans, keds sneakers, basic outfit. Now, there ARE occasions when I dress up- and I go all out. But it's a big change because I want a big reaction. Ordinary, day-to-day stuff, who's got the time? I'm comfortable with who I am, and who I am isn't limited by how I look or dress. And I force others to recognize that.

overdressed, but I'm a woman and in the area I live, there are a lot of slobs, so I come out looking very classy. The men think it's hot and the women, well I guess they envy

Underdressed. Overdressed looks pretenious. Makes women look like they're on display. Or worse, hookers. Guys look like blow-hards, or, worse, mobsters. Dress slightly down but carefully. Be yourself.

Always better to err on the side of overdressed.
People will always think you have somewhere important to get to!
The exception is a pool party.

Overdressed is always best. As I say "when in doubt, overdress". I would rather be over-prepared than under-prepared.

Underdressed but somewhat nice for whatever occasion it may be. I would want to look good. If you go with a skirt or nice pants you will be fine.

hi Peter, My interpretation of "sensible casual" is shiny shoes, daft socks, lifelike trousers, open neck blouse, no tie, and an non-obligatory jacket with badges on the left lapel. regardless of the indisputable fact that, even as in a extremely intense-score placed up, on a "dressing-down" friday, I offered myself in a pink boiler healthful with a very loud tie, and no blouse. This received artwork force recognize for the sheer sillines of it. Oh, I placed on awesome denims to artwork each and every so often, to say that i'm common-going, which i'm, yet those saggy jobs on the elderly look slightly suspect. purely take your tie off, placed on a diffent colored jacket to the trousers, and all is wisely.
