It is a pity that Christopher Eccleson wasn't around longer; he was a GREAT doctor! But one of the best things about the show, and one that the fans accept, is that the doctor changes. The new series is fantastic! David Tennant has a lot of interesting qualities and really brings energy to the role (DT is a bit more animated, but less wry than CE).
Of course, everybody has their favourites. Tom Baker was such a smash with that scarf and cavalier attitude that almost everyone rates him best. But really, they're all great.
The new series is the best sci-fi series in years. It's wonderful.
Go the DOCTOR!!!

I haven't actually seen the new Doctor live, just in stills and snippets.
I think the Doctor is epitomized by Patrick Troughton, Tom Baker and McCoy.
I think the Doctor was brought down by Pertwee and Davidson.
Collin Baker caught on in the last 6 episodes of his short life span, but the first 15 did him in as a totally arrogant AH.
Tom Baker is the Ultimate Doctor.
Jamie, Nissa, Sara and the second Romana are the ultiamate companions.
Both Masters were great. I also liked the Rhannie!
The new theme, new titles and the new Master were high points in the new producer's realm, what's his name? Can't remember it. I think he had three names. He was the Production Manager for most of the Baker run. Then he became producer, but the Pertwee producer was his boss and picked Davidson, a real dud.
John Nathan Turner. His most major contribution was the new Master, who was a dead ringer for the old one, the new theme and the new title sequence.
Turner also gave us McCoy, who was a pretty good Doctor.
Turner seem to realize that Baker and Troughton had character.
I would really like to see more Troughton episodes, I've only seen a few and he was great.
Tom Baker was an extention of Troughton.
Troughton was a buffon who got the job done inspite of himself and he enjoyed every minute of it, much to the Shagrin of Jamie.
Baker took things in stride, never flinched and always had something witty to say to break up the mood.
Pertwee and Davidson were stick in the muds.
They never really gave much to the flavor of the doctor.
They were larger than their own characters (oops, in the case of Davidson, smaller) and mailed the roles in.
Baker and Troughton at least had fun with the role!
From what I saw, I don't think the new producers know much about the Doctor or what to do with him!
I started developing a show for American TV loosely based on the Doctor, which I called Time Keeper and planned to have a female lead with a male companion.
She's a functionary, more like a cosmic Dog Catcher than a Time Cop!
She catches them in a virtual net to be spayed and neutered!
The evil people are Free Timers, Anarchists who want no regulations.
She works for Time Central, who's job is to keep the fabric of time from being unravled by newbees and exploiters from the Free Timers group.
I wanted Tom Baker to play the head Free Timer, who is a little like Bill Gates! I thought it would be a neat role for him!
He'd get to play the "master" in my show!

It was unfortunate Christopher Eccleston wasn't The Doctor for long, but kudos to the BBC for immediately hiring David Tennant to fill the role. After there not being an new series for 16 years, they would have been crazy not to regenerate the doctor at the end of the series. David Tennant totally amazed me in "The Christmas invasion", and I hope that what I saw in the last few minutes, will be what I see in Canada when the second series starts in October.
