overall I guess I'd have to say that I think an author has a good writing style if the pleasure of reading his/her book is surpassed only by the significance of what you gain after turning the last page (be it enlightenment, a tear, laugh, or simply a fulfilling conlusion to a great reading experience...)

I like Rowling and Snicket when I feel like something light and fun--adore the Harry Potter series. But my favorite author is Salman Rushdie because he has such a fantastic story-telling style. I recommend Haroun and the Sea of Stories and the Moor's Last Sigh--amazing, wonderful, intricate, beautifully told stories!

I LOVE how descriptive JK Rowling is and how vivid she makes Harry and the wizarding world. I like Cecily von Ziegesar's story's of scandal in rich high school kids' lives. I love Meg Cabot and her total honesty thoughts and there are minor details linked to life around the time the book was published.

I agree with you on J.K. Rowling's book (I like the whole magical world right in our own backyard idea) and halfly on Lemony Snicket's books. I like that sort of style. It has some sort of darky edge to them (except most of the books there is some sort of murder which is sort of mean to keep killing off).

I love Sarah Dessen's writing style...she's great.
But if I had to only pick one....I'd have to go with Stephenie Meyer....her writing is beyond good....her book Twilight is one of the best books ever. Her writing style is magical...you cannot put the book down...no matter how long the book is...and what time you start reading. How many writers are good enough that you feel HAPPY to read a 500+ novel in one sitting because you can't bear to put it down???

I'll give any author a chance, but my favorites are J.K.Rowling (her writing is superb), Janet Evanovich, Jane Austen, Alexandre Dumas, and Dee Henderson (she is my ultimate favorite becuase I get so into her books that I feel as if I'm there, I start laughing, crying, smiling, etc as I read what happens to her characters. I own all her books and have read each of them at least twice).

Meg Cabot is hilarious, sarcastic, and deadpan. I love her writing style. I also really really like Michael Crichton's, although his descriptions can be overdone sometimes.
