Phil Niekro, Hall of Fame and 318 game winning knuckleball pitcher used two fingers with the fingernails dug into the seams and would throw with the same motion as a fastball but keep the ball straight as it left his hands. When he was on it, he was real hard to get a solid hit off him.

Lightly dig your fingernails from your index and middle finger into the top seams like you are throwing a four seam fastball use your ring finger for balance and your thumb under the ball to make a C shape. Don't snap your wrist too much or overthrow. Just let it go naturally and it will "knuckle." Some people don't like the seams and use the white part. That's how I do it anyway.
