Stand By Me by Ben E. King
Lyrics: Jeffrey Leiber/Michael Stoller
Peak: #4 in Top 40 charts
Peak date: 6/18/1961
Re-release: 1986 for movie, Stand By Me
When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see
No, I won't be afraid
Oh, I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand
Stand by me
So darling, darling
Stand by me
Oh, stand by me
Oh, stand
Stand by me
Stand by me
If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
Or the mountain should crumble
To the sea
I won't cry
I won't cry
No I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand
Stand by me
So darling, darling
Stand by me
Oh, stand by me
Oh, stand
Stand by me
Stand by me
King recorded this shortly after leaving The Drifters in 1960. It gave him a solid reputation as a solo artist. This started as an old Gospel song that King re-wrote. He wanted The Drifters to record it, but the group's manager rejected it. After leaving the group, King brought it to the legendary songwriting team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who polished it into a hit.

When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we see
No, I won't be afraid
Oh, I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand
Stand by me, so
* Darling darling stand by me
Oh, stand by me
Oh stand, stand by me, stand by me
If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
Ot the mountain
Should crumble to the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry
No, I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand
Stand by me, and
(Repeat * 2 times)
Whenever you're in trouble
Won't you stand by me, oh stand by me
