Took mine to the dry cleaners and told them the problem--she did wonders with it, and then my sister told me to hang it in the sun--the smell comes from the mildew/moisture in the closet or basement.

Tweed can smell strongly, especially if you allow it to get damp, i.e. get caught in the rain while wearing it.

Best bet is to air it well outside if you can, on a fine and hopefully breezy day. Then find scented sachets to buy which are not offensive to you, and fix one to the hanger on which the tweed coat is. Repeated airing is the best bet though.
