As in the text, distance is the vertical scale of your graph and time is the herizontal scale.the tortoise keeps crawling at a constant rate without stopping.However,because the hare is so confident he will win,every once in a while he stops hopping and waits for the tortoise to almost catch up, then he starts hopping again.during the time the hare is stopped,what is the slope of his line on your graph?

Think about it: when not moving it means time is passing but the distance travelled is the same. i.e. no change in distance. Therefore it's a horizontal line on your graph (distance being the verical axis), an equivalent of slope 0.
